The Impact of HIV/AIDS on Older Persons in Africa and Asia

November 7-8, 2008
University of Michigan

Conference Objectives:

The aim of the conference is to bring together a group of researchers who can provide evidence-based assessments of the impact of the AIDS epidemic on older persons. While the findings presented may later assist advocacy efforts concerning the issues treated, this is not a primary goal of the conference. Rather we are interested in analyses and interpretations that allow for findings and conclusions that may confirm, contradict, or provide a more nuanced picture of the situation than is sometimes presented on the basis of presumptions and impressions. Our hope is to be able to draw a set of conclusions that are accountable to reasonably solid evidence. This does not exclude evidence from qualitative approaches as long as broader implications can be drawn when interpreting the findings. Regardless of the approach taken we would hope that it would be open to the full range of potential impacts on older persons, be they negative, mixed or even positive. In this way, we believe our conference can make a unique contribution to advancing knowledge and informing realistic policies and programs.

This conference is funded by the National Institute on Aging through a grant to the Michigan Center on the Demography of Aging (MiCDA).

Conference Proceedings:

We are currently negotiating with Research on Aging the possibility of a theme issue of the journal using papers from this conference. This would come almost exactly 10 years after the Research on Aging theme issue on AIDS and the elderly in December 1998.
